The Thermo Fisher Scientific Phambili Trust

The Thermo Fisher Scientific Phambili Trust is a broad-based Black economic empowerment initiative. The Trust’s goal is to help Black students develop academically and empower themselves by providing educational enrichment bursaries.

1) Value of the bursary

The bursary will primarily cover tuition fees and living costs. Further costs, ancillary to the applicant’s studies, can be covered if there are excess funds in the bursary provided for the applicant to the tertiary institution.

2) Tenure of bursary

The Trust offers the bursary for one (1) academic year.
The bursary is renewable, upon application and subject to the eligibility and academic performance of the applicant.

3) Eligibility and selection criteria

To be eligible for consideration for the bursary, applicants must be:

  • Black people as defined in the B-BBEE codes of good practice.
  • From an economically disadvantaged background and demonstrate financial need.
  • Pursuing further studies or obtaining skills in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields at a South African tertiary institution.
  • Below the age of 35.

4) Application Procedure

  • Online applications: Online applications will be accepted through the online submission portal
  • Hardcopy applications will no longer be accepted by the Trust and any hardcopy applications submitted will not be processed. All applications must be completed through the online applications platform
  • The submission of incomplete and/or late applications will not be accepted.

5) Call for applications

Application for 2025 will open from 14 January and will close on 28 February 2025.

6) Application Requirements

a) Complete application form;
b) The following supporting documents must be attached or uploaded along with the completion of the application form:

  • Certified copy of identity document;
  • Copy of full academic record (including the latest available results) (if you are already studying at a university);
  • Copy of final matric/national Senior Certificate results (if you have completed grade 12 and are entering your first year at a university);
  • Proof of acceptance or registration by the tertiary institution;
  • Tuition fee statement;
  • Accommodation invoice/quotation (where applicable);
  • Motivation letter as to why you should be awarded the bursary;
  • Certified copy of your parent(s)/legal guardian(s) ID;
  • Parent(s)/legal guardian(s) proof of income or unemployment (affidavit stating unemployment);
  • Certified copy of a SASSA letter if any of your family members are receiving a social grant and are contributing to your household income;
  • Proof of income or unemployment (affidavit stating unemployment)*; and
  • Certified copy of a SASSA letter where the applicant is receiving a social grant (where applicable)*.
